Import Taxes & Duties

EU Customers are required to pay VAT and customs fees on all purchases. All fees will be charged on arrival in your country by the relevant customs authority and the amount differs from country to country. If you refuse to accept delivery and the goods are returned to us you will have to pay the shipping costs + a 5% cancellation fee. Our refund and exchange policy applies.

Important

The number of countries that Royal Mail can access is changing daily. Most major export routes remain open, and Royal Mail continue to accept and process mail, although customers may experience varying levels of delay.

As of 14th March 2025 we are unable to ship / there are delays to the following countries for the foreseeable:

  • Afghanistan (unable to ship here since 16.08.2021) -  There is currently no route to Afghanistan as carriers have cancelled flights since Monday 16th August 2021.
  • Australia - Tropical Cyclone - Australia Post have advised that tropical cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall in Queensland on Thursday 6th March 2025. As a result, the Brisbane office of exchange will be closed from midnight (local time) on Wednesday 5th March with the current aim being to reopen on Friday 7th March. Mail operation is affected for all mail types in postcode areas 4000-4999 where delays can be expected. Services in northern New South Wales may also be disrupted.
  • Belgium - Strike - Belgian Post have informed Royal Mail that blockades have now been lifted at various sorting centres following the strike of 13th February 2025 however targeted strikes may continue throughout the network, especially in the Brussels and the south Belgian regions. As a result, delays may still be experienced for all mail types until further notice.
  • CanadaIndustrial Action - Royal Mail services to Canada resumed as of Monday 30th December. Canadian operations resumed Tuesday 17th December bringing an end to the strike action that commenced 15th November. Canada Post have been working to clear a significant backlog of items stored during the strike action. Whilst significant progress is being made customers should still expect delays for items posted prior to strike action through January 2025. 
  • Columbia - Handover Delays - There are currently delays locally in Columbia due to an ongoing handover issue in the country with no end date at present. Royal Mail will update once the situation improves.
  • France (Mayotte) - Cyclone Chido - La Poste of France have informed Royal Mail that the infrastructure in Mayotte (postcode 976xx) has been severely impacted by the passage of Cyclone Chido. As the airport is not currently operational, the shipment and delivery of all mail items are suspended until repairs can be undertaken. The shipment of letter and parcel post to the Comoros via Mayotte is also suspended.
  • Georgia - Severe Weather - Georgian Post have informed Royal Mail that mail delivery throughout the western region has been disrupted since the 23rd February 2025 due to very poor weather. In some areas, deliveries are partially restricted, whilst in others they have been completely suspended. As a result, delays are likely to be observed until the conditions locally improve.
  • Haiti - Service Suspension - Due to the situation in the region currently and a number of flight cancellations Royal Mail are not currently able to accept traffic for this destination. Any items already posted and in the pipeline will be returned to sender.
  • Iceland - Earthquake and Volcanic Activity / Storm - Icelandic Post have advised that a new volcanic eruption started just north of Grindavik in the Reykjanes peninsula on Sunday 14th January 2024. It is deemed likely that more eruptions will occur around the town in the coming weeks, hence It is unlikely that habitants will be allowed to return to live in Grindavik in the coming weeks or months. Iceland Post has not delivered mail in the Grindavik area since the original evacuation 13th of November 2023 and due to the area being uninhabitable it seems unlikely it will be possible to deliver mail in Grindavik in the near future. Royal Mail will provide any further updates on this as they become available.
  • Ireland - Customs Delays / Storm Éowyn - Royal Mail's service to Ireland is operating as normal. Items that require the payment of import taxes may take longer to be delivered as this is required before items are released from Irish customs. Please note: Delivered Duties Unpaid items sent to Ireland are handled as follows: Where a mobile number and/or email is provided, the recipient will receive a text and/or email and a letter with the amount of tax to pay plus An Post’s processing fee; Where just the address has been provided, the recipient will receive a letter. In both situations the recipient will receive instructions on how to pay and will have 16 working days to make the payment before the item is returned. The pay by date is included in the customer notification. All items are held in the Dublin Mail Centre Campus before being released, once payment is received. If payment is not received by the payment due date or the customer rejects the item then it is returned to sender. An Post have informed Royal Mail that a state of Force Majeure has been declared from the 24th to the 27th January 2025 for its entire territory due to storm Éowyn. Delays should be expected as there will be no deliveries for the entire country today, Friday 24th January. Normal delivery is to resume Monday 27th January.
  • Israel - Security Situation - As a result of the current situation in Israel Royal Mail are experiencing delays with many flight cancellations. This is a fluid situation and may change at short notice. Throughout the country, the retention period for unclaimed items has been extended to 30 days. All items are subject to delay and Royal Mail will continue to provide updates as they receive them. Please note at this time, Royal Mail are unable to accept items addressed to Gaza or Khan Yunis and The West Bank.
  • Italy - IT System Issues - Poste Italiane have informed Royal Mail that they are experiencing an IT issue at the Malpensa Lonate Pozzolo office of exchange. The system is currently operating intermittently and they are working to restore normal functionality. As a result, processing delays for parcels may be experienced. Letter traffic is not affected.
  • Japan - Earthquake - Japan Post have updated that the situation has now improved after the impact of the earthquake in January but there is still a lot of rubble in certain areas which continues to effect their operation. The postcode areas which remain affected are 9270000 – 9299999 and delays may be experienced as result.
  • Kiribati - Infrequent Service - Connecting flights to Kiribati have been available again since the 15th of December 2022. However, please note this service is infrequent and therefore customers should expect items to take between 2-3 months to reach their final destination.
  • Lebanon - Delays - Lebanon Post have informed Royal Mail that it has entered a state of war since the 19th September 2024 with many flight cancellations and road closures. This is a fluid situation and whilst Royal Mail continue to export to the country, this could change at short notice. Whilst the post is trying to maintain service, the scope of impact cannot be fully determined at present and delays will likely be observed throughout this period.
  • Moldova - Airspace availability - Due to the situation in neighbouring Ukraine, Royal Mail have been advised that Moldovan airspace is closed. Royal Mail have an alternative route in place, however, as this is a non-direct route, please be advised that there may be short delays to the delivery of your item.
  • RussiaService availability - Royal Mail are still despatching postal items to Russia. Royal Mail are continually monitoring the situation and will provide an update if there are any changes to their service moving forward.
  • Somalia (unable to ship here since October 1991)
  • South Africa - Delays - Please note that customers currently using Royal Mail's services to South Africa may experience delays. Royal Mail are continuing to export as normal however are aware of extended processing times locally at present. Royal Mail will provide further updates as they become available.
  • SudanService Suspension - Restrictions on this route continue to be challenging owing to civil unrest in the country and as a result a full service suspension is now in place. Any items currently held in OEs are expected to be returned to sender.
  • Syria (unable to ship here since December 2012)
  • Ukraine - Service availability - Royal Mail continue to make regular mail despatch to Ukraine via their Postal Partners. In the absence of air transport, they have rebuilt their international logistics network using road line haul and trains to convey postal items to, and from airports outside of Ukraine. In areas without active hostilities, all Ukrposhta post offices will remain open. Sorting facilities are equipped with electricity generators to ensure uninterrupted work and maintain normal customs and sorting procedures. However, operationally delays are still likely to be experienced until further notice.
  • Ukraine - Crimea & Sevastopol Regions (unable to ship here since 2014)
  • USA - Californian Wild Fire & Severe Weather Anchorage, Alaska - USPS have informed Royal Mail they have declared a state of force majeure due to the impact of the Los Angeles fires that has caused widespread and catastrophic damage in Southern California. There are major routing and delivery issues, including destruction of postal facilities and private properties affecting postcodes in the 90001–95399 area with recovery expected to be lengthy. USPS has also declared a force majeure in the Anchorage, Alaska area due to severe weather in post code areas 99556 to 99780 where delays are likely be experienced.
  • Vanuatu - Earthquake - Vanuatu Post have informed Royal Mail that a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the country on 17 December 2024, disrupting Internet connectivity and flights. The event has caused significant structural concerns at the Vanuatu Post Limited building and airports are temporarily closed for repairs with road access to international seaports blocked by landslides. As Internet connectivity and electricity are currently down, processing and delivery delay can be expected until the situation recovers.
  • Yemen (unable to ship here since March 2015)
